Gorge 2020

Why this is an issue:

“Gorge 2020” is a three-year process to review, and revise as necessary, the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Management Plan

POV:

“No sooner than five years after adoption of the management plan, but at least every ten years, the Commission shall review the management plan to determine whether it should be revised. The Commission shall submit any revised management plan to the Secretary (of Agriculture) for review and concurrence, in accordance with the provisions of this section for adoption of the management plan.”

POV:

It has been 13 years since the last update.

Some say that the original intent of the scenic act was to protect natural resources AND promote economic activity.  The economic activity part of that equation has since been interpreted to mean only within urban areas.  This is okay only if you are willing to accept the reduced opportunities for jobs and housing that this barrier creates.

Current Status:

The public comment period for the proposed draft revisions to the Economic Development Chapter of the Management Plan is open now. The draft updates are open for public comment until February 1, 2020.
